PRESS RELEASE: April 2017

The Theatre Bath Bus Makes its Theatrical Debut at Bath Comedy Festival

On Sunday 9 April the Theatre Bath Bus officially flung open its doors to the public for the first time. This unique mobile performance venue, which took over a year to complete, was entirely funded by the local community. When the doors opened at noon it was flooded with people eager to see the finished product.

The 11 meter-long, Volvo Wright Renown bus has been completely transformed into an intimate, high quality 24 bench-seat auditorium with built in stage, dressing room, box office and even a bar area. It is an extremely versatile space, and can be used for a diverse range of projects which include; theatre, mobile cinema, workshops, comedy, music, seminars and party spot.

During the daytime on Sunday members of the public were invited to explore the bus, many even got the chance to perform on the stage. In the evening, the red carpet was rolled out for a fabulous launch party; attended by the Right Worshipful the Mayor of Bath Cllr Paul Crossley, members of the arts community, and supporters of the Theatre Bath Bus. The event featured delightful performances by pianist Matthew Finch, Musical Director of Bath Light Opera Group, and performance poet Janey McLeod.

Mayor of Bath, Paul Crossley commented: “What an exciting project you have created. The Mayoress loved the concept. Converting an old bus into a mobile mini theatre and entertainment space is a wonderful idea. Well done to all who helped bring the idea to delivery.”

The Mayor also seized the opportunity to have his photo taken in the driver’s seat wearing the coveted bus driver’s hat.

Luke John Emmett, creator of the Theatre Bath Bus states: “I feel so very privileged that the arts community in Bath believed in us and this idea, and have helped us to create this wonderful resource for all to use. Everyone has been so incredibly generous with their support, money and time to help us to realise this unique project. We must give a massive thank you to Nick Steel at Bath Comedy Festival, Kirsty and the team at Southgate and Visit Bath for allowing us the opportunity to park in Brunel Square.”

Zoe Bailey, co-creator said: “The launch of the Theatre Bath Bus was fantastic; seeing members of the public and local community enjoying what we have created, and being inspired to use it for their own projects. We are delighted there is a real interest in this project and are excited for the next step.”

The Theatre Bus is available to hire now. And with over twenty booking enquiries already it looks like the bus will be busy bringing creative projects to communities in and around the South West.

The Theatre Bath Bus, which has been funded by members of the community, is set to launch in Bath this April. The Theatre Bus will be appearing on Brunel Square as part of Bath Comedy Festival from Thursday 6 until Tuesday 11 April. There will be an open day on Sunday 9 April from 12pm – 5pm where members of the public can hop on board, explore the bus, and chat to the team about using it for their events. This will be followed by a private launch party for sponsors in the evening allowing backers to experience first-hand what their support has created.

The year-long project has seen the conversion of an 11 metre long single decker bus be fully converted from a passenger bus into a mobile venue which will be available to serve communities in and around the local area. The bus can be used for a diverse range of projects which include theatre, comedy, poetry, music, workshops, seminars, meeting space, cinema and party spot.

Luke John Emmett, creator of the Theatre Bath Bus comments: “A year ago this project was just a crazy dream and we’ve been overwhelmed by the support of the community in Bath and further afield to help us realise this project and make it a reality. The bus has really captured people’s imaginations and booking enquiries are already flying in from a range of diverse projects. We must say a massive thank you to Nick Steel at Bath Comedy Festival and the team at SouthGate Bath for enabling us to appear in such a central location. What we have created is a blank canvas that can be used by anyone in the community to help them realise their projects and more importantly get work out to areas that have little or no engagement with the arts.”

Zoe Bailey, co-creator says: “We are all really excited to launch the Theatre Bath Bus. We have put in a great deal of work over the past year and now we can start to facilitate organisations to use this fantastic space. The Theatre Bath Bus can benefit everyone in the arts community and beyond.”

Plans are already afoot to take the bus to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2018 where a group of fifty local young people will perform three different shows for a week at the world renowned festival. From then, who knows? The Theatre Bath Bus is open for booking, and with the ability to go anywhere, the only limit is your imagination.

The Theatre Bus team look forward to meeting you on Sunday 9 April 12pm – 5pm.

Zenith Youth Theatre Company Donate £1000 To Support Theatre Bus Project

Zenith Youth Theatre Company have pledged a staggering £1000 towards the Theatre Bath Bus.

Zenith Youth Theatre Company, which was established fifty two years ago, provides young people from all different backgrounds with the opportunity to develop skills and confidence through musical theatre. Chris Jones, Chair of Zenith said “We have a choice in life, we can sit around and wait for things to happen, or we can get out there and help make it happen. Like many other organisations, when it was needed, Zenith received tremendous support from the Bath community and this project provides us with the opportunity to reinvest that goodwill.  What inspired us about the project was that the bus has the potential to benefit everyone in and around Bath, not many projects can do that”.

Scott Rogers, Artistic Director of Zenith Youth Theatre says “The prospect of using a resource like this to stage a project for Zenith is a very exciting and unique opportunity that not only would be of benefit to the company but also the local communities that the bus visits. This really does need to happen for Bath and hope that the whole artistic community gets behind it.”

Zenith join a whole host of local companies who have pledged their support for the project including; The Old Bag Theatre Company, Bath Light Operatic Group, The Heroine Project Presents, The Bathford Players, New Old Friends and Butterfly Psyche Theatre.

There is a real buzz about this project and people have come up with some amazing ideas and inspiring uses for it. We have just under a week remaining to raise the final funds. We really need everyone to donate what they can and help us to reach the target to enable this amazing community project to take place.”

Theatre Bath is Raising Money for a Ground-breaking Mobile Arts Venue:

The Bath Theatre Bus

All aboard the Bath Theatre Bus – a unique venue which will benefit the entire arts community in Bath and the surrounding areas.

Imagine being able to take a performance anywhere – anywhere with 13 meters of parking space. Impossible? Not anymore, thanks to the Bath Theatre Bus!

The Theatre Bath team are raising the funds to turn a 13 metre, single-decker, Volvo B10 Wright Renown bus into a mobile performance space, where anything is possible.

A Kickstarter has been launched to secure the £16,000 needed to convert the bus and already the community are voicing their support for the project. With just over a month to reach the target the clock is ticking to help support this inspirational project.

Theatre Bath Director Luke John Emmett says: “This is a unique opportunity to create a mobile performance space that will enable performances of all kinds to be taken out into the heart of communities. What we’re creating is a blank canvas that can be used by everyone from musicians to comedians, theatre makers to poets and artists to workshop leaders. There are so many potential uses for this mobile space and the benefits to the community are huge! This bus will enable those who cannot access the arts for whatever reason to have access to them in their own communities.”
